Flaky Academic Conferences

Paralleling the proliferation of journals of ill repute is the globalization of the marketing of academic conferences. Below is a growing list of sellers based solely on the spam I receive.

BIT

Another conference organizer that also has not received rave reviews is BIT Life Sciences, aka BIT Congress and BIT Group Global. Correspondence with this company, posted years ago on the discontinued Double Helix Law blog, is reproduced at the end of this posting along with a more recent emails expressing "great pleasure and privilege ... to welcome you to give a plenary keynote speech."

BIT's "high importance" email of 3/8/16 to Dr.David B. Kay reported that "It is nice to announce that The 6th Annual Symposium of Drug Delivery Systems (SDDS-2016) will be held ... in Nanjing, China. It is a dedicated event for global medical scientists. [W]e cordially welcome you to deliver a speech in Symposium 5: Smart Nanomedicine. ... If you have any precious suggestions ... , please reply this email and send your speech title to us at your earliest convenient." Notwithstanding the fact that I have no training in medicine and drug discovery, my "participation will accelerate and promote the cognition of Drug Delivery sciences in the World!" As if that were not enough, there will be "Industrial Promotion, Appoint People by Abilities, Culture Agglomeration."

A followup email of 7/20/16 from Ms. Grace Chen, Program Coordinator in Dalian, explained that she was "pleased to extend the invitation to you again. We are cordially welcome you to deliver a speech in Symposium 5: Smart Nanomedicine. Your participation will accelerate and promote the cognition of Drug Delivery sciences in the World!" The "confirmed companies and academia organizations" included Harvard, Michigan, UCLA, USC, USD, Cornell, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Washington.

Likewise, an email of 5/24/16 is at least the third one that announces "BIT’s 3rd International Congress of Forensics & Police Tech Expo 2016, which will be held during October 27-29, 2016 at International Conference Center, Dalian, China" and "will cover the Interdisciplinary Symposium, workshops, training courses, and posters which will highlight the advances in technology that have transformed forensic science and technology into law enforcement practice. ... The Plenary Session will invite a distinguished international panel including Dr. Henry Lee and many others to talk about the impact of recent forensic scientific and technological breakthroughs around the world. ... we appreciate your advices on: 1. Which track you are interested in; 2. What topic you will talk about? Would you please forward us the potential speech title and brief introduction to the topic? ... We look forward to seeing you all there."

It was followed by this one on 6/13, 6/15, 7/3/16, and 7/22/16 (excerpts): "How are you doing? I am Cherry, the Program Coordinator ... . I am writing the letter to make sure if you have received my letter previously, it is about the conference: WCF-2016 which will be held during October 27-29, 2016 ... . Maybe there some problems with my mailbox ... . I am writing again to cordially welcome you to give a speech. Now we have invited some distinguished experts including Dr. Henry Lee and Dr. John Zheng Wang and many others ... . In the past two congresses, we have invited more than 300 worldwide leading experts, famous police officers, and law practitioners ..." I responded to one of these with a proposal to speak on K-DNA, a chimeric form of the molecule discovered through alchemy. The paper quickly was added to the program.

Paralleling the Dalian spam are the spate of emails starting in January 2016 for the "World Gene Convention--2016, Shanghai." The suggested topic? "About Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences, Interpretation." The correspondence (tongue in cheek from me) is near the end of this posting.

Conference123.net

Philip <Philip@howetiao.net> writes: "Dear Scholars/Professors, conference 123.net is devoted to hosting international conferences covering a wide range of subjects. To enhance the communication between scholars and specialists, we sincerely solicit papers from around the world." The advertised 2016 International Conference on Agricultural Science and Biotechnology, in Xi'an, includes the topic of "Cyborg Art." The 2016 International Conference on Biology and Life Sciences, in Hangzhou, includes all medical specialties. Apparently, the latter is combined with the 2016 International Conference on Public Health and Medical Sciences (same city and dates), which includes "Insurance Medicine."

Delanie <delanie@quantitdoo.net> writes (7/21/16): Dear Professor and Researcher, conference123.net devotes to hosting international conferences covering a wide range of disciplines. To enhance the communication between scholars and specialists, we sincerely solicit papers from around the world." The 2016 International Conference on Education and Information Technologies, in Jinan, ranges from physical education to semiconductors.

Toby <Toby@werexiang.net> had the same message on 8/15/16 with three disparate conferences in Jinan and a fourth in Nanjing.

SSHD2016 genuinely invite scholars and academics to submit their papers on social science and human development. Besides the meaningful academic conference, you can also get a chance to enjoy the beauty of Guilin. ..."

Another DEStech effort, as per an email of 7/4/16, is ESHD2016, the 2016 International Conference on Education Science and Human Development. It "will be held from November 12-13, 2016 in Changsha, China. The Topics Include: 1. Education Science 2. Human Development. Author Guidelines: 1. All papers should be written in English. 2. Submitted papers must not be less than 4 pages, and can’t exceed 6 pages in length. ... All accepted papers will be published by DEStech Publications and submitted to CPCI for indexing. Some excellent papers will be selected and recommended to EI or SCI journals. ESHD2016 Organizing Committee"

On July 28, 2016 3:20 a.m., ICSS2016 <Linda@mail1.drown-drug.com> wrote to "Respected author": "Hello! The 2016 3rd International Conference on Social Science (ICSS 2016) will be held on November 12-13, 2016 in Changsha, China. We would like you to come to the meeting." As for the topic of "social science," the email referred only to "the field of Education," including "martial arts and traditional national sports."

A cryptic email of 8/16/16, from Ferdinand@mail3.jeens-short.com, referred to an undefined SSES2016 in Guangzhou with the following advice: "All submissions must be not less than three pages in length. Otherwise, if your paper exceeds six pages in length, you have to pay for the additional pages."

Engineering Information Institute

Hardly limited to engineering, this group's "mission is to meet the satisfactions of our authors involved in all kinds of comprehensive conferences. ... Engii offers a perfect circumstance to share scientific resources, exchange their own research experiences, and innovate in studying for all the scholars of the world. Through Engii, we dedicate to delivering efficient and latest information to interested people. We look forward to benefiting and establishing harmonious relationship with everybody."

The 2nd Conference on Advances in Biology Education (CABE 2016) "will be held from June 1 to 3, 2016 in Nanjing, China. This Conference will cover issues on Biology Education. It dedicates to creating a stage for exchanging the latest research results and sharing the advanced research methods." And by the way, the email notes that it will be "co-located" with five other conferences at the same time in June in Nanjing.

Eureka Science

Impressively, Eureka Science and the University of Sarjah (both in Sarjah, UAE), have organized two conferences with some of the same speakers for the same days next month. With "the patronage of the His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin-Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, Sharjah, UAE," the same four Nobel Laureates will be speaking at both the 4th Biotechnology World Congress and the 7th International Conference on Drug Discovery and Therapy. For example, the American pharmacologist, Ferid Murad, whose work garnered a share of the 1998 Nobel Prize in physiology, is a "Conference President" who promises that "'The 4th Biotechnology World Congress' would provide eminent scientists the opportunity to present their cutting edge researches [sic]...."

Dr. Murad thinks the same is true (with the name of the conference changed) for Eureka's Global Biotechnology Congress 2016, to be held in Boston (where he will again be a Conference President). The same words also appear in a Welcome Note for the "The 7th International Conference on Drug Discovery and Therapy, which, yes, "should provide eminent scientists the opportunity to present their cutting edge researches ...." These conferences, Dr. Murad assures us, are "important," "exciting." and, of course, "scientific events."

By May 31, 2016, the connection to Eureka Science had become harder to detect, not being part of the spam, and being buried on the drug conference website. Indeed, even the name of the conference changed slightly (to Drug Discovery and Therapy World Congress 2016). The advertised speakers are

Plenary Keynote
  • Ferid Murad (President)
  • Ada E. Yonath (Nobel Laureate)
  • Ei-ichi Negishi (Nobel Laureate)
  • Sidney Altmani (Nobel Laureate)
  • Charles N. Serhan, Harvard Medical School

Global Science and Technology Forum

The "Call for Papers: 5th Annual International Conference on Law, Regulations and Public Policy (LRPP 2016)" cannot be beat for breadth of coverage in law:
The laws of the land lay the foundations of peace and order, and to ensure people progress in all aspects of their lives – whether in business, education, travel, health or recreation. The role of public officials is to create, scrutinize, implement and uphold the laws in order to protect the rights of every individual, corporate entity or institution.
The organization behind this conference is the Global Science and Technology Forum, a group from Singapore that has been accused of "conference hijacking." GSTF is "a proud partner of 38 Universities around the globe." (The links of the batch that I clicked on lead only to the home pages of the named institutions.) It publishes a slew of "science journals" on such subjects as general philosophy, music, media and communications, education, and business. Not surprisingly, it is on Beall's List as "an exploitative publisher that ... everyone should avoid."

The chairman of the conference is "Prof. the Hon. Dr. Stephen Martin, Chairman, Board of Governors, Global Science & Technology Forum (GSTF). Chief Executive, Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), Chairman, Bank of China (Australia), Former Speaker Parliament of Australia, Former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Strategy and Planning) Curtin University of Technology, and Former Pro Vice Chancellor International, Victoria University." Keynote speakers are Professors Julien Chaisse and Chao Xi of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The LRPP17 conference email advertisement (same description) features as keynote speakers Dr. Paul Babie, Personal Chair of Law in the Adelaide Law School, The University of Adelaide, Australia, and Dr. Gabriel Moens, Professor of Law, Curtin Law School, Australia.

International Scientific Events

Email of 3/20/16 (excerpts): Dear Colleague, We have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in conferences, part of International Scientific Events 2016, to be held in Hotel "Royal Castle", Elenite on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast (EU). Organized by Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, Science & Education Foundation and partners. Best regards, International Scientific Events, Bulgaria
(Identical email sent 5/17/16 with a "note: registration deadline extension applies" and again on 6/3/16 for the three September conferences)

North Sea Conference and Journal

This one, received 5/15/2016, is a dilly: Dear David, We noticed your paper , "The good, the bad, the ugly: The NAS report on strengthening forensic science in America" published in Science & Justice 2010. Your work might relate to our conference, the 5th International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics (ISECM) - working on small scales, 10-14 Jul 2016, Inverness, Scotland, UK. You may like to give a presentation at: Session 35: Internet of things ... Regards, Conference Team, International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics

The North Sea Conference and Journal has one officer, its director, Ronda Chen, a US national living in Scotland. Her occupation is "Energy Organizer and Training." See https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/SC452202/officers.

Omics

Well known as a "predatory publisher", OMICS is also in the conference business. Despite the California address, its roots are in India. An email of 6/14/16 is entitled "Promulgate your research":
Dear Dr.Colleague, We are currently bringing forth "5th International Conference on Forensic Research & Technology along with external scientific association with the researches, academicians, and Forensic market leaders around the globe, scheduled during Oct 31- Nov 02, 2016 at San Francisco, USA. ... Based on your eminence in the field, we would like to invite you for Forensic Research 2016 Conference. ... All accepted abstracts for this Conference will be published in the respective OMICS International Journals ... Thanks and Regards, Charlene Campbell, Program Manager, 731 Gull Ave., Foster City | CA 94404, USA

"Eminent Speakers" listed in the email are Yoshiaki Omura, New York Medical College, USA; Ronn Johnson, University of San Diego, USA; Shaul Gabbay, University of Denver, USA; George W. Adams, National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), USA; Lucy Love, G4s Forensic and Medical Services, UK; Corena De Beer, Stellenbosch University, South Africa; Riaud xavier, National Academy of Dental Surgeryl, France; Stephanie Kewley, Birmingham City University, UK; Marcelo de Oliveira, University of São Paulo, Brazil
Omics also seems to be marketing under the brand of conferenceseries.com with an address in Nevada:
Dear Dr.Kaye, David, ... Beneficial Microbes 2016 is specifically premeditated with a unifying axiom providing pulpit to widen the imminent scientific creations. The main theme of the conference is “Exploiting power of Microbes for the Industrial Development ". Submit your abstract at: http://beneficialmicrobes.conferenceseries.com/call-for-abstracts.php. ...

See also this email about a cancer therapy conference out of suite 400. The same strategy is evident in an email of 8/22/16 to "Dear.David H. Kaye , We would like to solicit your gracious presence as a speaker at the upcoming CME Accredited 2nd International Conference on Adolescent Medicine and Child Psychology which is going to be held from October 06-07, 2016 at London, UK."

Oxford Global (OGM)

Oxford Global Marketing Ltd., with offices in Singapore and London, writes (5/12/16): Dear David, I hope my email finds you well. I would like to invite you to speak at our 2nd Annual Genetics in Forensics Congress next year in March 2017, London ... a two day event attracting over 200 senior level delegates. The subject areas suggested by our advisory board are available. However, if you would like to suggest a new topic please do get in touch. ... If you would like to arrange a short phone call to discuss the congress or have any queries you would like answered via email, please do not hesitate to contact me. ... Kind Regards, Eleanor Halsey, Producer
A couple of subsequent emails begin "Dear David, I hope my email finds you well. I was just keen to follow up with you from my previous email in regards to the speaking invitation for the 2nd Annual Genetics in Forensics Congress next year in March 2017, London." The Advisory Board for 2016 consists of
  • Jack Ballantyne, Professor, University of Central Florida, Associate Director – National Center for Forensic Science
  • John Masters, Professor of Experimental Pathology, UCL
  • Matthew Greenhalgh, Director Forensic Science, Cellmark Forensic Services
  • Thomas Callaghan, Senior Biometric Scientist, FBI Laboratory
  • Allan Jamieson, Director, The Forensic Institute
  • Bruce Weir ‎Professor and Chair, Department of Biostatistics, University of Washington
"Confirmed speakers" according to the website include
  • David Balding,Professor of Statistical Genetics, Centre for Systems Genomics, University of Melbourne
  • Jack Ballantyne, Professor, University of Central Florida, Associate Director - National Center for Forensic Science
  • Michael Coble, Forensic Biologist, NIST
  • Mitch Holland, Associate Professor, Pennsylvania State University
  • Henry Lee, Professor, University of New Haven
Apparently unconfirmed, but listed in the cyclic photographic display of "2016 speakers" is Bruce Weir, University of Washington. Why the website is limited to 2016 speaker information for a 2017 program is unclear. An email of 6/13/16 supplied a pamphlet that listed a 2017 advisory board with the following US members:
  • Elaine Pagliaro, Assistant Executive Director, University of New Haven, Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science
  • James Landers, Professor, University of Virginia
  • Jack Ballantyne, Professor, University of Central Florida
  • Seth Faith, Assistant, Professor of Forensic Science, North Carolina State University
The only names for "confirmed speakers" in the pamphlet were
  • Peter Gill, Professor, Norwegian Institute of Public Health
  • Sheila Willis, Director General, Forensic Science Ireland
  • Ann Ross, Director, Forensic Sciences Institute, North Carolina State University
  • Randall Murch, Associate Director, Research Program Development, National Capital Region, Virginia Tech
OGM's homepage announces that "Oxford Global provide specialist business information for the Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences industry in the UK, Europe and Asia. We run some of the most respected congresses, summits, conferences and webinars for industry leaders. We also offer bespoke event management to companies in the sector."

Oxford Round Table

Email of 1/14/16 (excerpts): Hello. This is a quick reminder that registration and abstract submimssion [sic] will be closing on January 30, 2016 for the 25th International Childhood Education Symposium during the dates of March 13 – March 16, 2016 at Harris Manchester College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. Harris Manchester College is one of the thirty-eight colleges that form the University of Oxford and was founded in 1786. We are pleased to invite you to become a member of this Symposium. Membership is limited to approximately thirty-five (35) interdisciplinary scholars who have a particular interest in this subject.

Apparently, it matters not that I have yet to write a word on childhood education -- I still might be one of the "approximately thirty-five (35) interdisciplinary scholars who have a particular interest in this subject" -- and as a "Member[] of the Round Table" I will "have access to ... the Oxford Union Debating Society, colleges and halls of Oxford dating back to 1204, ... and may, on recommendation, become [an] official reader[] of the venerable Bodleian Library of the University, founded by Duke Humphrey circa 1440 ... ." Moreover, my "participation as a member of the Round Table is not contingent upon presenting ... ."

The Oxford Round Table that sponsors these International Round Tables is an American invention (starting in Kentucky) with a history that would impress a corporate reorganization lawyer. At one point, it sued a critic and asked her to "to sign a statement saying that she was 'penitent and ashamed' for making the criticisms" in a Chronicle of Higher Education forum.

SASI Institute of Technology & Engineering

They must be desperate. I am getting several emails a week (as of 3/30/16) for the IET-IEEE-3rd EEECOS Conference. Although papers from "all the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology" can be submitted as late as two weeks before the conference and "authors (outside India) who are unable to attend the conference can also be present the paper through online," they "will be published by IET and also submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore Digital Library."

As if that were not enough, SASI is advertising (4/6/16) another conference in June. The proposed content is confusing. On the one hand, "[t]he primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in Communication, Signal Processing, Power, Intelligent, Embedded System and Data Analytic." On the other, "[p]apers are welcome from all the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology."

Apparently, this "all of science and technology" conference regardless of the name of the conference is SASI's modus operandi. As of 4/29/16, its "International Conference on Electrical, Electronics, Engineering Trends, Communication, Optimization and Sciences (EEECOS/E3COS)-2016," to be held June 1-2, also is open to papers "from all the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology" -- and "authors (outside India) who are unable to attend the conference can also be present the paper through online (video presentation)."

The following is from the Institute's webpage (unaltered):
What began as a small school in with a 9 students in a small village in West Godavari has created a sensation in the field of education by winning national and state awards as well as ranks in JEE-IIT and EAMCET. The very name SASI instills confidence in the minds of many anxious parents aspiring students in and around the Coastal Districts of Andhra Pradesh with its strong roots in West and East Godavari districts is imparting.
SASI has created its own brand image for the values it follows. Sasi Educational Society with its strong roots in West and East Godavari districts is imparting quality education for over 34 years. The total students strength of all the institutions run by the society is about 14000 What began as a small school in with a 9 students in a small village in West Godavari has created a sensation in the field of education by winning national and state awards as well as ranks in JEE-IIT and EAMCET The very name SASI instills confidence in the minds.

Scientific Federation (SF)

This email lists a "Bioplymers-2016 Organizing Committee" consisting of Dennis J. Gray, University of Florida, and faculty from China, India, and Iran.

As of 5/28/16, the Scientific Federation website lists neither names of individuals nor an address. The organization styles itself an "abode for researchers" and publishes such open access journals as the Journal of Flu Science. The Who We Are page speaks volumes:
We are exploring the research to the world through the world-class scientists ... we are taking into the step to transform the technology and research through the world class professionals, to get awareness worldwide by organizing the international conferences. Which may also lead to helpful in maintain the peaceful collaboration between the countries. Our devoted team is very much proficient to organize the international conferences, and they are having much experience and expertise in this aspect.
Indeed, attendees can rest assured that "Your meeting was planned by devoted volunteers from your obedience and Scientific Federation staff. We have worked hard to make sure it is the most tremendous conference you attend this year!"

The Dalian Letters: A BIT Much

Ever heard of BIT Life Sciences? It is a Chinese company–and spammer extraordinaire–that bills itself as “World Leader of Intelligence Exchange in Life Science” (http://www.bitlifesciences.com/conferences.asp). It promotes, relentlessly, “World Congresses” on, it seems, everything it can think of. Below is a sampling of my correspondence with “Nina,” “Alina,” and others about invitations to speak at several of these events.

I am sending a copy of this email to individuals currently listed on your website as speakers at the conference as well as those listed as invited speakers in your email to me. I understand that many of the latter group have declined your invitation, and it is dishonest to continue to use their names.

RE: 056-Confirmation of your response at BIT’s 1st WCF-2010, Dalian, China
From: [Unnamed forensic scientist]
Date: August 17, 2010, 9:28 p.m.

I have been on their list of speakers, key note speakers, section coordinators and every other imaginable role for months. I have asked, requested, begged, demanded etc to be totally removed from any mailings, email lists and/or promotionals- without success. I wrote a blurb explaining that I wasn’t going and requested and received cooperation from the American Board of Forensic Odontology and the American Society of Forensic Odontology in email blasting their total membership, which was forwarded around the nation and world to other forensic organizations announcing to them and the world that I was not presenting, key note speaking or even going, including my history of requests- ad infinitum- to be removed from their promotions in all forms. To my total surprise, I received responses from individuals in Italy, New Zealand, Japan and many other countries who had planned to attend and were cancelling their plans.

I’m pretty sure the AAFS can’t do an email blast on its own (all those legal reasons) but I’m not sure they couldn’t forward an email from one of their menbers (or many of their members- all of us!) announcing he or she is not attending, never intended to go and was being listed on this conference promotional materials against his/her wishes. If we all sent such an email that was forwarded, the AAFS and all the organizations it touches would clearly know the truth about this organization and its operational methods. As you can see in the latest list of invited speakers, I’m still on the list.

How about an honorarium?

Thank you for your reply! It is not easy for me to apply for your financial support because our committee usually provides the financial support for the speakers who could successfully recommend some speakers for us, and your kind assisstance and cooperation could also help me apply, however, I do not have your presentation title, if you could give us the title, it is also easier to apply. We are looking forward to your title and recommendation list.

I take it that you have secured the honorarium to cover my travel, housing, and other expenses. This is good news because I cannot come without financial support. I can speak on “forensic genetics: freeing the innocent and convicting the guilty with DNA evidence.” …

I noted with interest today that you are the co-chair of the International DNA and Genome Day in China. I recently received an email asking me to make a presentation at that conference. I receive many such requests that are not truly invited presentations but simply a message blanketing many people in the field to increase attendance at the conference. In my experience invited presentations to other countries includes covering expenses. I have not, however, received any such offer from the organizers.

I am writing to ask if you can clarify this situation. Thank you.

My role in the program is news to me. I received the kind of request you did, advised them that I would consider speaking if a reasonable honorarium could be provided. I never received a clear response. I have not agreed to speak, and I have nothing to do with organizing the conference. I’ll tell them to remove my name from their materials. …

Thank you for your continued interest in my attendance. My paying $800 to speak at your conference is more than it would cost me to pay for registration and a hotel room. Furthermore, in October, I received the following email from a colleague in America:
“I noted with interest today that you are the co-chair of the International DNA and Genome Day in China. I recently received an email asking me to make a presentation at that conference. I receive many such requests that are not truly invited presentations but simply a message blanketing many people in the field to increase attendance at the conference. I never agreed to co-chair any program, the use of my name in your promotional materials is unauthorized and unacceptable, and I shall not participate in this or any other program organized by BIT Life Sciences.

Please remove my name from all email lists.

Since you have suggested the title "About Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences, Interpretation," I will combine the two to speak on "K-DNA: A Nonoptical Isomer with Strongly Chimerical Properties that is in Need of Interpretation in the Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences."

I look forward to further information on the honorarium. To travel to China, chair the session, and deliver my address, I would need only U.S. $2,500.

Thank you,
David
